Pachydactylus montanus.

This is a relative of the more well-know Tigergecko,  Pachydactylus tigrinus. It is also a lot more unusual to find in the hobby.

P montanus belongs to a group among the large Pachydactylus family usually referred to as the serval/weberi-group.

The serval/weberi group is a cluster of small rock-dwelling Pachydactylus who are similar in bodysize, bodyshape and behaviour.

Originally this species of gecko comes from the Karas mountains of South Africa. It´s environment is a rocky desert and thus a hot(Between 30° and 35°C, locally far above 40°) and dry climate. It´s mostly nocturnal but I often find them basking under the spotlight during the day.

The P montanus is a relatively small gecko reaching about 10 cm(4 inches) as an adult, the female being larger than the male.

Suitable food are any insects small enough to fit in their mouths such as crickets, roaches, mealworms, fruitflies and small moths. Their appetite is huge so they need immense amounts of food.

This is a really simple lizard to care for. Spray with a little water every two to three days and feed every or every other day. All food must be liberally dusted with a good calcium/vitamin supplement in order to avoid rachitis. This is especially important for breeding females.

Watching those little geckos is great fun. They are fast, curious and social animals who communicate by the means of vocalization.
